Ash Wednesday at St Matthew Academy 2020
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a solemn 40-day period devoted to reflection, prayer, spiritual preparation and fasting before Easter. As an outward expression of faith, Catholics on Ash Wednesday may have ashes applied to their foreheads in the shape of cross.
This year the Academy held several services led by Mr Wanza and some members of the Light Bearers to mark the start of Lent.
An addition this year was for all of the primary phase to attend an Ash Wednesday service. The newly formed Light Bearers at the primary phase with the support of Ms Toprak took led this service. The pupils were superb!
The Academy would like to take this opportunity to thank members of the Light Bearers (Kaede, Michael, Romeo, Nivithan, Benita and Charlie) who led the services at the secondary phase as well as pupils in Year 10 (Jack, Christine, Rochelle and Luke) for their contributions throughout the services who distributed the ashes.
All pupils showed deep reverence and respect for the occasion. One pupil commented, “The service allowed me to reflect on the errors of my ways and encouraged me not to make the same mistakes.”
