Media and Communications Scholarship
Throughout their time at St Matthew Academy, Media and Communications scholars are given extra access to our media suite, which is comprised of a green screen room and editing room fitted with Macs. They will learn how to operate our camera equipment (including DSLR cameras and tripods), and be trained in cinematography, photography, and how to edit short films, audio and SFX in Final Cut Pro X.
Over the course of the three years, they will also learn the art of visual storytelling through script writing, work towards entering national film competitions and enjoy creative tailored film camps during school holidays.

Finally, they have the opportunity to go on trips, including the 'Warner Bros. Studio' tour, which includes a specialist film lesson at the studios led by Warner Bros. staff, and 'Sky Academy Studios', which includes a behind the scenes look at the 'Sky Sports News' studios and the opportunity to use their state-of-the-art film equipment and editing software to create their own news story or trailer.

Our Media and Communication Scholars are also offered priority access to the Film Studies GCSE, which boasts 88% grade 9-4 and 82% grade 9-5. Inclusion in the Media and Communications Scholarship gives pupils in Film Studies a huge advantage, not only for their ability to analyse films, but also in the practical coursework element (30% of the final grade), which uses all the skills learnt throughout the programme.
Sporting Brilliance Scholarship
The Sporting Brilliance programme is designed to give pupils the opportunity to extend their existing talents and ability. Selected pupils will take part in an exciting and practical introduction programme where they will form their athlete profiles through a variety of nationally recognised fitness tests. They will use this as a platform to assess their strengths and weaknesses and how to improve their own athletic performance in their chosen sports. Throughout the programme, pupils will participate in specialised games, indoor athletics and physical training sessions. Scholars will be undertaking sessions that will involve intensive physical methods of training which includes; Circuit, Plyometrics, Interval, Fartlek and Speed, Agility and Quickness training.
Scholars will also have the opportunity to take part in masterclass sessions with professional athletes and visit exciting external enrichment destinations such as Charlton Athletic Football Club and Sky Sports Studios. Enabling them to gain valuable insight into a professional sports set up and mainstream sporting media giant. In year 9 pupils will complete the programme by participating in various theory workshops, strength and conditioning training and the Sports Leaders Award (SLQ). Gaining valuable coaching and leadership experience as well as a recognised sports leadership qualification. All pupils on the programme are expected to represent School teams and choose a sports related exam option for their GCSEs.
